HMSeX Week 1

Hi everyone, and welcome to my new blog for Heightened Multisensory Experiences!!

I am still struggling to settle on just one word as my focus, but I think i have narrowed it down to these words: Sublime, Brutal, Terrifying, Meditative and Serene. Sam, Jonathon and I have discussed a collaboration with each other for sublime, however we still need to work out what exactly we are each doing. I have a few ideas for terrifying and brutal, and meditative and serene are also still works in progress.

My main inspiration for my Brutal and Terrifying works this semester are pulling from many artists such as

Brutalismus 3000:

MUST DIE!

and Cristobal Tapio de Veer’s composition work from Smile (particularly the end credits scene):

I chose these as i think a lot of these are quite brutal in their production, and i would like to experiment how i can amplify these experiences to almost be an “assault on the senses”. Terrifying (“things that go bump in the night”), i would like it to be an immersive experience in the Capitol, having it be a light and sound show (think theatre production sans actors), and do some crazy panning, similar to Tapia de Veer’s work on Smile. (i remember being in the cinema for the end credits and it was absolutely terrifying). I want to utilise field recordings of sounds that you would hear at night, but morph them into something scary and build tension through that.

Meditative and Serene i was almost thinking of a sound art installation in the Black Box, and experimenting with touch designer to create some abstract nature visuals and create a “walk through nature” experience, to assist in calming anxiety.

I think for this semester, i want to expand my technical skills into lighting and vision, and learn to utilise the Pharos system and try some basic things in touch designer. I would also like to extend my skills in recording, mixing and mastering as it has been a little while, and want to move into surround mixing for the black box and (hopefully) 7.1 in the Capitol.

My experimentation for next Capitol class i think i want to do lighting to a snippet of Angel by Massive Attack, as i think that it has some varying sounds and interesting affordances that i could experiment with lighting.

Anyways, that is my week 1 entry, looking forward to seeing you all next week!
