Week 6 – Lighting

This week, we looked at how lighting can affect and change what mood is evoked in theatre and live work. Our task this week was to take 6 images of the human form and speak to what each image evokes and then to pick our favourite. Here are my 6:

(From left to right) 1. The singular light coming from the laptop is almost anxiety inducing, with the single light and mefigure focusing so heavily on it carries a weight of importance, a sense of needing to know what is so important on that screen that its lighting the whole figure, 2. The “JoJo” pose, with the back up light and the front up light angled slightly towards the figure creates a larger shadow which makes the figure seem smaller, but still carries a dramatic feeling, 3. We lit the subject through the mesh of the chair which created a pattern on the subject, which created a vibe that the subject is looking through a grate or window and looking out into the world.

(from left to right) 4. We again lit the subject through the mesh of the chair, highlighting the face, this on the flip side of the previous one looks more like the subject is trapped somewhere, looking out into the distance or free world. 5. This subject we experimented with a 2 light setup, a side key and a side fill, which helps give it a dramatic look, but also could be really good for a portrait.

And finally, my favourite photo – the A24 special. This was simply done with my laptop (the red light) at full brightness, then Sam held his phone with a full screen image of blue above Jon’s head at a slight angle. The blue and red almost represent a clash of emotions, blue representing calm and collected, whilst red represents anger and rage (see image below):

This clash of traditional good vs. evil colours could represent the state that our subject is in, is he feeling angry about something that has happened, and his conscience is telling him to be calm or upset? The light is also filling in what would normally be in shadow if we had one light or the other, and having the colour fill adds an extra layer of emotion that couldn’t be perceived with either white light or one light.

Work in progress update

I am continuing working on my main Terrifying experience, with placing sound and finding affordances when and where I can. Hopefully by the end of next week my sound will be either finalised or in the mixing stage, and can focus my energy into working on the Pharos lighting. I am still waiting for Jon to finish the Sublime piece for us to begin working on, so hopefully that will be done in the next few weeks.
