Today, we had Byron Scullin as a guest lecturer who I found very informative and made some very good points. From the guest lectures we’ve had so far, he has seemed the most grounded and had realistic views on being an artist in the modern day.
I saw a lot of myself in Byron, and he unlocked a part of me which was actually just doing things. I don’t want to be necessarily just doing the technical part of sound engineering (to quote him, being an “angry, middle-aged white dude” doesn’t sound like an ideal lifepath), but focusing more on just doing and creating. His take on having the lifestyle on having the freedom to work on multiple projects at once and keeping himself youthful by doing so I found rather interesting, and want to use that as a guide in my own work and life from now onwards. My main difficulty i have is getting the motivation to go out and seek these people, mainly due to impostor syndrome, but overcoming that I think I can use this framework.
I plan to implement his ideas of sum and difference tones that he used in Bass Bath to help increase audience retention for my project. Although i wont have access to infra subwoofers, I still believe i can emulate this tone into a feeling rather than hearing experience. I think I also want to explore the opposing ideas both Byron and Nik were talking about, where you experience the sound and visual differences in at opposing times.
I think I have also made the decision to no longer continue doing Pharos, and focus more on the sound design aspect of it. I am going to contact some people to maybe work on a 3D environment which will be an animation, representing the bedroom or another aspect of the design to help influence the terror. Maybe we can implement some triggers which certain sounds affect certain aspects of the environment as well? Will talk to my designer to work this out. Looking forward to getting this done and dusted in the next few weeks, and hopefully it turns out well!
