Week 8

Welcome to week 8!

Project Update

Since the last project update, I have continued developing the sound design for Things That Go Bump in the Night. The overall concept has stayed the same, but I have changed the direction of the audio so that sound is now the main immersive focus, while a 3D bedroom environment supports the experience visually. In the class presentation today, Darrin brought up the idea of the SUBPAC being a part of the experience, which i think will definitely strengthen my piece instead of possibly detracting like a 3D environment might (I will still explore the 3D environment in case it could add something). I think leaving it to the imagination for the listener/viewer allows them to really get into their heads on what they find terrifying.

The design is built upon a continuous ambient dread bed (patent pending), so the piece already feels unstable before anything actually happens. After Byron’s lecture last week, I was intrigued by the idea of the two tone “plus and minus” frequencies, which helps create a sense of physical pressure and unease, whilst still giving the piece movement. As stated before I was trying to keep tension subtle, however I think slowly building the tension to a climax before the end of the piece will help leave a lasting impact on the viewer. The silence and negative space will still be at play in the beginning of the piece to set the tone. Here is the sound so far:

The sound still needs to be finalised, and I think I will go forward with the SUBPAC and possibly if the artist doesn’t come through, I may get Sam to work on a TouchDesigner piece, but I want to focus on the SUBPAC first. Also the build to a climax and then drop to a nothing. I will also remove the spatial aspect from it, and just make it a stereo render to be listened on headphones in conjunction with the pack.

As for the second project with Jon, I will be mainly mixing it and focus on the mix for him, but will be also possibly spatialising it. As he has other projects, this one has taken a back seat, so i may not end up doing my intended piece if it doesn’t work out.
