Welcome to week 13 and my last entry for HMsEx!
Things that go bump in the night
What worked:
This piece in it’s current state I am incredibly happy with. All of my test audiences (read: victims) have been thoroughly discomforted by the subpac, and the sonic landscape. Both Darrin and Nik’s feedback of making the dreadbed more of an entity rather than just an underlying feature i think proved incredibly effective in the overall sound/direction of the piece. Joining the pieces together and making them flow through more and appear as if through the bed itself also gave it a bit more of a reason to be there.
What can/could be worked on in future:
I think if I hadn’t decided to create my piece in its original conceptual state and had this as the main direction, i think it would’ve been more clear in the final outcome and been even more effective (e.g more flow, causal abnormalities, etc.). Also, if i was able to figure out how to have the dreadbed/subpac frequency seperate to the audio to do some weird disorienting things to the listener. Mixing binaurally might also have accentuated the feeling as well.
Listen to the final thing here (best experienced with a subpac):
Sublime/Exhilarating
What worked:
Jon’s composition was really really well done, i think it captured the feeling of sublime/exhilarating perfectly. Mixing was pretty cruisy too once i got it all set up.
What can/could be worked on in future:
I think this is a really good proof of concept. the original idea was to have live recordings of big bands/musicians we knew, and then spatialise it all in the black box. the midi instruments leave a lot to be desired, and i think real recordings would’ve bolstered this a million times over.
You can listen to it here:
Overall, I’m really happy with how this term progressed, it was hard work and my time management needs to be worked on, but my works i have produced i am happy with. If i was to do this again I’d want to collaborate more, and maybe try my hand at a pharos design or spatial audio.
